Your True Value and Jesus – By Father Andrew Bahhi
In the book of Genesis, it said when God created man, He created him in His image and likeness. But sin corrupted this image. And that’s why people feel they are not worthy or have value.
In Luke 18:18-30, there was a rich man who came to Jesus who asked the most important question under the sky. “What can I do to enter the kingdom of God?”
Jesus responded – Go, sell everything you have and distribute it to the needy, carry your cross and follow me.
And the man became very sad and did not follow Jesus because of what was in his heart. There was something more valuable than God with this man. And Jesus is asking the same from every one of us, cut down the connection between how we look at ourselves and what we have.
If we don’t have valuable clothes, makeup, jewelry, we feel bad. Or people’s opinion makes us feel good. Or there are people who value themselves based on how much money they have. Or there are people who measure themselves by how many things they have.
The Bible is not against having good things in our life. But the Lord wants to cut down connections between self-esteem or self-worth, and what we have.
I want you to be a good person, but as long as you evaluate yourself upon what you have, you cannot qualify for heaven. Because none of these things are in heaven. All that matters is how much you have Jesus in your heart.
To Jesus, the more you are broken, the more value you have to Him. The lower your self-esteem, the more He loves you and is close to you. That’s why the Lord in these texts wants to tell that people, “leave the earthly value and I will lead you to heavenly value.” This is the “money” that will enable you to enter the kingdom of God.
This is why the man was sad because he was looking for earthly value.
In life, we buy all forms of insurance, health insurance, car insurance, home insurance. And yet, we always worry. But the one who surrounds his life with Jesus, even if he has nothing, he will always be happy. The source of his value doesn’t come from something that will go away.
Jesus says, “I am the rock.” He is the only one in history who was able to say “I am” yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever. He is the only one who will never leave you. He is the only one who will never underestimate your ability. He is the only one who will never hold himself back from you. He loves you and cares for you.
Your true value depends on the one who pays for you. Jesus is the only one in the whole universe who gave His blood so you can be saved.
